However I wasn't very good at guitar and trying to translate my thoughts into song, well, let's just say I wasn't all that prolific and my entertaining skills, well it may have seen me as the Drama Captain of my school but that's where that dream ended but how my photographic journey started.
Photography was something I dabbled in as a teenager with no real intention of doing anything with it, you see as a teenager of the 90's I thought I would be like Woody Allen or even Quentin Tarantino, but circumstance would have it's way and I was made to do photography to fill in a subject requirement.
I wasn't so into the technical side of photography (and in some way's i'm still not) but I very much enjoyed the story telling element. I had found my voice and instead of pen to paper all I had to do was place eye to camera to create my own narrative if you will. Photography became my key to creating but also my way of communication.
Now as an adult in the "noughties", I don't think I want to really be like anyone. Sure I still have my heroes and sure i'd like to emulate the success of a lot of people, but my art, my photography is now about movement.
I want to take my viewer and selfishly myself somewhere. I want us to always be moving somewhere. I want us to discover, learn and be full of questions.
Maybe this will change later on, but for now, that's what I want for my work and for those wanting to be taken somewhere too.

"Alana exhibited at one hundredth gallery
during September and October 2011. One of the things most enjoyed about Alana’s
photography was her diversity of styles and techniques. From her urban scenes
and landscape photography, to her heavily processed constructure pieces,
Alana’s photography appealed to everyone who visited. Alana creates in very
clear themes so it is easy for the public to digest and enjoy. I look forward
to continuing my working relationship with Alana".
ALANA APHOY
New North Gallery has been exhibiting photography by
Alana Aphoy since 2010, in both group and solo shows and as part of the New
North Prize salon.
Always engaging and playful, like the artist
herself, her photographs range from the classic black-and-white image (with
which she won the “People’s Choice Award in the 2010 New North Prize, to the eye-popping “Constructure” series in
which architectural forms are given the kaleidoscope treatment and become
exciting and intriguing sets of shape and pattern. Beauty is found by a visual re-arrangement of
static and even mundane forms and the result is pleasing to the eye (we respond
gratefully to symmetry) as well as enchanting to the mind. Although the “Constructures” series is
undoubtedly produced by digital technology, it relies equally well on carefully
selected subject-matter, skilful photography and inventive manipulation and
placement of the imagery to produce the finely-achieved effect.
Alana Aphoy most recently exhibited at New North in
“Alison’s Daughters”, a major group exhibition by 15 established and emerging
women photographers, held in March 2011.
